STRESS REACTIONS

Dr. swaminathan in his article on theoritical views on stress and sress related health problems says that any condition that makes the body mobilize its resources and burn more energy than it is normaly does is called Stress.

As per Hans selye, three stages appear to occur in the body's reaction to sress. viz. Alarm reaction, Resistance, and Exhaustion. They are called the General adaptation syndrome(G.A.S)

i) Alarm Reaction: If an individual is emotionally aroused the following bodily changes takes place.

They are: Dilation of pupils,dryness of throat,nervous perspiration, need to urinate frequently,trembling, rapid pulse,tense muscles ,profuse sweating etc.,

ii) Resistance: If the stress continues for some time the individual enters the second stage called resistance to stress. In this stage the individual recovers from the first burst of emotion and tries to endure the situation as best one could.

iii)Exhaustion: When one arrives at this point, he/she has exhausted the internal resources for dealing with continued stress.

STRESS RELATED DISORDERS:

During stress the individual shows a lot of behavioural and physiological changes which affects the individual's health.
The disorders caused due to mental and emotional strain is known as Psychosomatic disorders. wich is coined by Heinrorth 1818."psycho " means mind and "soma" means body.
Hence, psychosomatic disorders are those ailments which are physical in appearence but the cause is psychology of the individual.

They are Respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disorders,Gastrointestinal disorders,Migraine headache ,Genetourinary disorders.

Menstural disorders;

Onset of mensturation is tinged with emotion. Before onset, women feel tense and worried. This is known as premenstural tension.They become moody and show anxiety.The other symptoms are reslessness, inability to concentrate,emotional outbursts,crying without any cause, irritablity, headache,back pain, insomnia etc.psychological factors have influencing role in Dysmenorrea or painful mensturation due to endocrine glands.

In another condition namely,psychogenic amenorrhea there is decrese or stoppage of mensturation.

The conditions related to this disorder includes emotional shock,sexual conflict,tension created by arguments and quarreling, intense desire for pregnancy etc.

Disturbances of sextual Functions:

Psychic impotence and frigidity are the two most common psychophysiological disorders with sex. In psychic impotence, the male is unable to perform the sexual act and derive plessure out of it due to emotional reasons.

In Females this problem is called frigidity.

In both the cases the individuals may experience pathological lack of sextual feeling or diminished desire for sex.There may be local neuromuscular reaction in the form of vaginal spasms in women which may make normal hetrosexual relationship difficult,painful or impossible.

Excessive feelings of guilt, fear of disease or hostility towards opposite sex are the examples of stressful conflicts which contribute impotence and frigidity,
